Do we need the RDAs?
The Taxpayers' Alliance would like the regional development agencies abolished. M Institute co-founder Jyoti Banerjee studies their report - he likes their data but disagrees with their recommendation.
Mid-size enterprises are the powerhouse of the UK economy.

M Institute is leading two workshop events, with support from Microsoft, to help medium companies progress their thinking and to develop their response strategies to these two key challenges. Both workshops are being held on the 17th June, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. You can either attend one or both events, as they have been designed to be separate but complementary.
9.30 – 12.00 Workshop One
Key indicators during an economic downturn
In the current economic cycle it is likely that medium business may have problems with maintaining the forecast revenue and profitability after coming out of the recent growth cycle. With the “cash is king” mantra likely to be re-established after a period of economic certainty, just how will medium enterprises cope?
Companies will need to revise their business plans and ensure they plan with accuracy and flexibility through the use of the best tools available where technology needs to be the enabler. Yet IT budgets are often hit in a cost constrained corporate environment.
However the analysts are predicting that medium companies are looking for more effective use of funds rather than cutting budgets, can this be the time IT breaks the mould?
2.00 – 4.30 Workshop Two
Accounting for the Green Agenda – How your company can benefit
The hype around the sustainability revolution has focussed on the benefits a medium organisation can gain from marketing (e.g. competitive advantage) and from cost efficiencies through organisations such as the Carbon Trust. However very little attention has been focussed on the underlying matrix that determine what is being accounted for and why, for example just how do you know what your carbon footprint is as a company? Technology can enable this but just why and how?
With the development of carbon-tracking technologies, real-time power monitoring and smart building systems, the IT department has a major role in shaping an organisation’s environmental policy.
But technology on its own will not be enough. Green IT is not only about spending money on new systems. There also needs to be significant cultural changes, amounting to much more than simply encouraging people to turn off their PC at night or not to print emails unless really necessary
